We Must Stop Hate Speech - 1709 Words
During the turbulent tides of the 2016 election, the question of whether or not hate speech is protected under the First Amendment has been brought up multiple times. Hate speech is defined by the American Bar Association as ââ¬Å"speech that offends, threatens, or insults groups, based on race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or other traits.â⬠One side argues that hateful comments should not and are not protected due to the oppression they bring. After all, why would a nation that promotes freedom and equality for all allow the harmful words of others to persist? Conversely, others argue that the First Amendment covers all forms of speech, hateful or not, and to not allow hate speech is both a violation ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In the R.A.V. v. City of St. Paul case of 1992, a 14-year old white boy burned a cross in the yard of the only African American family in St. Paul, Minnesota. Minnesotan law prosecuted him under the pretense th at it was illegal to place, on public or private property, a burning cross, swastika, or any other symbol likely to arouse ââ¬Å"anger, alarm, or resentment in others on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, or gender.â⬠However, the young man appealed, and the case was taken to the Supreme Court, which ruled the law unconstitutional in that it infringed on the First Amendment. While the law did not condone the boyââ¬â¢s actions as legal, they did condone the law to be defective due to it focusing on his motives rather than his actions. A similar case, Wisconsin v. Mitchell, was done the following year and dealt with Thomas Mitchell and several young African American boys beating a white boy. Mitchell allegedly instigated the fight, shouting, ââ¬Å"There goes a white boy; go get him!â⬠before both he and the other boys proceeded to chase and beat the boy in question. Articles in Grammar From A to The With An and Some Between
In Englishà grammar, an article is a type of determiner that precedes and provides context to a noun. A determinerà is a word or a group of words that specifies, identifies, or quantifies theà nounà orà noun phraseà that follows it: There are only two types of articles in English, definite or indefinite. The three main articles in English grammar are the, a, and an. This grammatical concept may sound simple, but there are some tricky rules related to using it correctly. Definite vs. Indefinite Articles The onlyà definite articleà is the, which specifies a particular individual or thing in a particularà context. For example, in the title of a famous Sherlock Holmes story The Hound of the Baskervilles, the first word of the sentence is a definite article because it refers to a specific case that the illustrious fictional detective tried to (and, of course, did) solve. By contrast,à Purdue Owlà notes theà indefiniteà articlesââ¬âa and anââ¬âsignal that the noun modified is indefinite, referring toà anyà member of a group, or something that cannot be identified specifically by the writer or speaker. Before Countable and Uncountable Nouns When dealing with articles, nouns can either be: Uncountable - You cannot count a specific number.Countable - The nounà doesà indicate a specific number. When a noun is uncountable, it is preceded by an indefinite articleââ¬âa or an.à Butte Collegeà gives this example to illustrate both: I ateà anà apple yesterday.à Theà apple was juicy and delicious. In the first sentence, apple is uncountable because youre not referring to a specific apple; whereas, in the second sentence, apple is a countable noun because you are referring to one specific apple. Another example would be: Would you like tea? or Would you like some tea.I would like the tea. In the first instance, tea is uncountable because youre not referring to a specific tea, but instead, just to some tea (an undefinable number or amount). In the second sentence,à by contrast, the speaker is referring to a specific cup or bottle of tea. When to Omit Articles As the first sentence in the previous example shows, you can sometimes omit the article particularly when the number or quantity is not known. Sometimes you would use the article in American English but not British English. For example: I have to go to the hospital. (American English)I have to go to hospital. (British English) Conversely, sometimes you omit the article in American English but not in British English, as in: I played rugby. (American English)I play the rugby. (British English) In these cases, the use, or omission, of the definite article depends on the type of English being spoken. Pronouns, Demonstratives, and Possessives You can also replace articles withà pronouns,à demonstratives, andà possessives. The Impact Of Technology On The Physical, Learning, And...
My little sister is around ten-years-old and has used technology daily throughout her childhood, with concentrated use beginning around age 5. This fixation with technology may lead to problems during her preoperational and concrete developmental stages. I often find myself telling her to go play outside or to play in her room, as an attempt to encourage physical activity, but I donââ¬â¢t really have any concrete explanation as to why my pleas seem to consistently fail. I currently assume that technology is more detrimental than beneficial, especially in younger kids when pertaining to their cognitive development. After researching, it has become more apparent that if there were negative side effects linked to technological overuse orâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Each of which are necessary sensory inputs required for development, and are lost upon children who no longer pursue activities that provide physical stimulation. Some of these include the normal development of posture, bilateral coordination, and self-regulation. The aforementioned lack of motion and stimulus can also lead to sensory issues involving their tactile, vestibular, and proprioceptive systems, leading to an inability to develop and understand movement patterns. Technology is borderline preventative in relation to the physical aspects of development in children, due to a lack of motivation that could potentially stem from the overuse of technology. The average American childââ¬â¢s health is beginning to decline at a marginal pace, and it can be systemically linked to; lack of sleep, less physical activity, mental overstimulation, burnout, and several other developmental problems. Many children now have televisions in their room which can hypothetically lead to lack of sleep, decreased physical activity, and shortened attention spans. Another concerning physiological problem is linked to childhood obesity, which affects a wide range of children across the United State and other countries. About 60 percent of the total output is slated for exports. [13] The company produced over 300 stock-keeping units in 2005, the smallest unit of measure when the ice-cream is issued from or returned to a warehouse, and had a research and development centre exclusively for the Magnolia ice-cream.
